Site Tech

This website was built and is maintained by Leonard Taylor, a member at VMCOC. I do this work as a way of reaching out to those seeking truth, especially to the members of the Armed Services serving at Fort Huachuca. I want them to know as much as possible about our family, so they will feel at home when they come to visit us.

I have made every effort to make this site compliant with W3C standards, using valid XHTML and CSS. If you encounter any errors or difficulties, please let me know via the form found here.

Following is a list of the scripts that I have assembled to make this site run, so if anyone is looking to do something similar, they can use the same code.

Main Site
I searched the web for a CMS (Content Management System) I liked, and finally found one called Etomite. A free, Open Source project, Etomite is easy to learn and use, with plenty of options for customizing. Unlike many other CMS programs, this one is not bloated with unnecessary add-ons, and sticks to doing its' job quickly and efficiently. It is written in PHP, and uses an SQL database. The site went live using Etomite on 9/27/06.
Bible Search
There are not many free PHP Bible scripts available, but I found one I liked called phpBible 0.9.7. It is an orphan, no longer being developed by its' author, but is still available.
Calendar
For a minimal cost, Easy PHP Calendar provides one of the best PHP calendars scripts available, and it is well-supported by its' creator. It will work either as as a flatfile or using an SQL database, has a great admin section, and is very attractive.
Contact Form
When a visitor wants to contact us, they use the Secure PHP Form Mailer Script. Free and actively developed, it is also great at stopping spam.
Membership Roster
This feature, found in the Membership Area, is used to help keep our church family in touch with other. It is a very-highly modified version of Gossamer Threads' Links2 perl script, and makes it easy to keep the database up-to-date. Flatfile and free for non-profit use, Links2 has the flexibility to do many things.
Security
The member areas of the site are protected by a free script from PHP Page Protect. This flatfile script is easy to install and customize, and is not cumbersome like some security scripts.
